Don Young was recently named President of The Monitoring Association (TMA). Congratulations are in order to Don for his selection. Here at SIAC, we look forward to his contributions to TMA and the contributions the association makes to quality alarm management practices.

Having a committed, seasoned security industry veteran like Don in this position is important to getting things done and creating visibility on important issues. Young, the CIO and executive vice president of operations at ADT, recently began his two-year term as the association’s president after the conclusion of TMA’s annual meeting. Young succeeds Ivan Spector, proprietor of Sentinel Alarm in Montreal.

I realize that many companies have concerns when an “ADT”(or any national company individual) assumes a significant leadership role in this industry. It seems they fear that these positions will be used in some anti-competitive or self-serving manner.  In my forty-plus years of working with industry associations, I can state unequivocally that I have never witnessed such an act.  The fact is we are extraordinarily blessed to have these leaders such as Don Young who are willing to serve and lead our industry. They are already at the top of their professional career and certainly don’t need the additional time-consuming aggravation of dealing with association politics.  They certainly do have an agenda with goals – all good leaders do.  But it is usually to tackle significant  issues or projects that raise the bar to benefit us all.  Please, let’s each thank Don for stepping up and taking on the responsibilities of this organization!

We look forward to having Don’s technology experience on board when it comes TMA’s involvement on alarm management issues. ASAP-PSAP (Automated Secure Alarm Protocol-Public Safety Answering Point) is a big commitment of TMA, and adding more communities to this service in the years ahead is something we believe will benefit the security industry over the long term. Don’s strong commitment to our  industry should help continue moving these types of efforts along.

TMA’s support of SIAC over the years has been integral to several of our key efforts benefitting our industry. We’re confident Don Young will extend that.
